Revisiting a Theme
A fat grey squirrel waddles at winter’s edge,
over a curb, past an abandoned tire.
Crooked homes tilt toward the sidewalk,
draw forth a scene buried deep in the synapses:
there, on that street, age four, my pants fell to my ankles
first time I tried to rollerskate.
I screamed for help and no one came.
Perhaps the fat grey squirrel’s great-
great-great-great-grandfather watched
as my sobs ceased, as I figured out
how to untie, to untangle, to unbind and walk away.
